Job Description

Main Purpose: To coordinate and lead the group responsible for the commissioning, maintenance engineering and technical services - operating and optimising of boiler and boiler aux, testing of plant and optimizing plant operation to improve performance.

 

Key Performance Areas:

Technical

  • Analyse operational and performance data, evaluate and propose operational changes.
  • Analyse clients operating mode and propose operational changes.
  • Ensure operating regime complies with relevant safety codes and design specification.
  • Interface with client operating and engineering department and sell SES capabilities.
  • Analyse mill and burner data, evaluate and propose optimal performance settings.
  • Check and set control and safety functions.
  • Remain abreast of technical developments in boiler technology.

 

Management and reporting

  • Monthly progress report and cost.
  • Ensure that project documentation records are filed correctly.

 

Staff and management training and development 

  • Development and training of subordinates.
  • Provides guidance and support to team members.
  • Mentorship role in the development of Engineer in line with corporate EE plan.

 

Controls

  • Project control, code compliance, cost and time.
  • Cost centre budgets and costs.
  • Identify changes in the market and advise corporate marketing and resource planning functions.
  • Any other job related duties as required from time to time.

Preferred Requirements:

  • B.Tech., B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • M.Sc. Engineering with a professional registration with ECSA would be advantageous.
  • PMP or any financial or projects qualification would be advantageous.
  • Management diploma/degree will be advantageous.
  • Professional registration with ECSA.
  • 15 - 20 Years’ experience in operating and commission of steam generating plants of which at least       5 -10 years’ should have been at a middle to senior management level.
  • Broad based knowledge and experience in power plants, petrochemical plants and mineral refineries. The integration of various engineering aspects have to be mastered and this includes, design, construction, welding, heat treatment, logistics, procurement and project management of the items to be serviced.
  • Experience in leading and managing Junior Engineers, delegating to them and to provide guidance on designs, projects, contracts, construction, technical investigations, planning, plant and manufacturing optimisations and proposals engineering.
  • Experience in providing appropriate feedback on all activities on the department to various other departments and the Engineering Manager.
  • Experience in providing the Engineering Manager with both technical and human resources and to support the organisation in executing all engineering activities both within the department and the broader organisation.
  • Sufficient and broad based knowledge to step out of areas of expertise to learn new skills quickly and implement them effectively.
  • Field monitoring, commissioning and maintenance engineering experience including boilers, mills, fans, precipitators/bag filters, fuel oil systems and burners, water treatment, soot-blowers/water cannons and de-ashing systems.
  • Sufficient and broad based knowledge to step out of areas of expertise to learn new skills quickly and implement them effectively.
  • Knowledge and experience with control systems.
  • Knowledge of plant performance – testing and optimisation as well as plant commissioning.
  • Knowledge of Maintenance Engineering.
  • Knowledge of fossil fuel firing and plant safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of project tendering and NEC contracts.
  • Computer literate (MS Office).
